Yuki Tsunoda Targets Podium at Japanese GP Following Red Bull Switch
In a shock announcement this week, Red Bull confirmed that it would promote Yuki Tsunoda to the main team alongside Max Verstappen for the remainder of the 2025 Formula 1 season. This follows two difficult weekends in Melbourne and Shanghai for Liam Lawson, who will now return to Racing Bulls.
Tsunoda’s Surprise Red Bull Move
For Tsunoda, the opportunity to drive for Red Bull seemed unattainable after four years and just two grands prix with its satellite team. However, having made an impressive start to 2025, the Japanese driver is now getting his chance at Suzuka.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the move was announced, Tsunoda expressed his excitement and ambition for his debut. “To be honest,” he said, “I never expected to be racing for Red Bull at the Japanese Grand Prix.” He continued, “Everything has fallen into place in just the right way for me to be standing here today.”
Despite the enormous pressure that comes with the seat, Tsunoda is embracing the challenge. “There aren’t many moments in life where you face this kind of extreme pressure and an opportunity as big as this,” he said, “so I can only imagine that it’s going to be an incredibly thrilling race.”
Adapting to the Red Bull RB21
Tsunoda has never driven the RB21, so making his debut in Japan could be a daunting task. However, he is confident and eager to learn. “I don’t want to raise expectations too much,” he said, “but for this Japanese Grand Prix, I want to finish on the podium.”
Tsunoda has spent time in the simulator getting familiar with the car. He found it responsive but not particularly challenging. “Of course, how I want to set up the car is probably different from Max,” he said, “I want to develop my own car setup, get a good understanding of it, and gradually get up to speed from FP1.”
When asked about the pressure, Tsunoda jokingly replied, “Yes, please pile on the expectations and pressure!” Despite the humor, it’s clear that Tsunoda is ready for the challenge ahead.
