Formula 1 Legend Accuses McLaren of Lack of Aggression
Formula 1 legend, Jacques Villeneuve, has taken a bold stance against McLaren, accusing them of showing weakness in their approach to racing. The 1997 F1 world champion’s criticism stems from Max Verstappen’s victory over Oscar Piastri during the Emilia-Romagna GP last weekend.
Villeneuve’s Criticism of McLaren’s Performance
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Villeneuve expressed his concern that McLaren lacks the ruthlessness needed to compete effectively in the drivers’ championship. He found it odd that seemed reluctant to challenge Piastri, despite the Aussie’s mistake at the first corner and slower pace compared to Lando Norris.
Villeneuve believes that McLaren‘s failure to prioritize any driver is now benefiting Verstappen in the title race. He stated, “Because Verstappen is in for the championship. You don’t want to give Verstappen wins. That’s more points for him in the drivers’ championship.
The Dutchman’s win has narrowed Piastri’s lead in the championship to 22 points, while Norris’s second place is now 13 points behind his teammate. Villeneuve argues that McLaren‘s contentment with second and third places is a reflection of this weakness.
Villeneuve’s Analysis of McLaren’s Strategy
Villeneuve also criticized McLaren‘s strategy, questioning why they pitted Norris early when it was clear he would eventually overtake Piastri due to the tyre difference. He asked, “Why make him lose three laps instead of giving him a shot at Verstappen?”
The former F1 champion also pointed out that McLaren did not take advantage of the virtual safety car and lacked the ‘let’s go for it’ mentality, which he believes is evident in their overall performance. Despite the insignificant impact of the other safety car at the end of the day, Villeneuve sees this as a clear indication of ‘s reluctance to take risks.
