Fastest Lap Set by Oscar Piastri in Second Practice Session
In a session marred by multiple red flags, it was McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri who set the fastest lap at the Japanese Grand Prix. His time of 1m28.114s edged out teammate Lando Norris by a mere 0.048 seconds.
Red Flags Disrupt Practice Session
Four red flags disrupted the session, causing significant loss of running time. The first was triggered following a massive accident involving Alpine rookie Jack Doohan.
After resuming following Doohan’s shunt at Turn 1, a spin for Fernando Alonso also caused a red flag. The session would be halted twice more before the end of the hour due to scorched grass areas on the track.
Despite these disruptions, it was Piastri who set the benchmark time. Local hero Yuki Tsunoda, making his Red Bull debut, came close but did not set a competitive time on the fastest soft tire due to the delays.
Incident with Jack Doohan
Having skipped FP1 for Alpine reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, Doohan completed just four laps before a big shunt into the barriers at Turn 1 – the Australian walking away having climbed out of his wrecked car.
Lewis Hamilton’s Performance in FP2
In the midst of these incidents, Lewis Hamilton was fourth for Ferrari ahead of Liam Lawson, while George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10.
