Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and four-time champ Max Verstappen have made a remarkable entry into the global elite of sports earners in 2025. According to Forbes, these racing titans ranked 22nd and 24th respectively on their annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

Hamilton shared the 22nd spot with Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez, amassing a total of $80 million over the past year. In contrast, Verstappen was just one step behind, earning $78 million and placing 24th, ahead of footballer Neymar Jr.

Most of Verstappen’s earnings – an estimated $72 million – came from his salary and bonuses with Red Bull. The remaining $6 million derived from commercial deals, including personal sponsorships and merchandise. However, it was Hamilton who outshone Verstappen in the off-track earnings department. Though Lewis earned less from on-track activities last year – $60 million – his off-track commercial activities, including investments and endorsements, were more substantial.

Predictably, Forbes’ list is dominated by ball game stars and a few others. For the third consecutive year, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo topped the chart with a total income of $275 million. Rivals will have to work hard to overtake Ronaldo’s earning power: basketball player Stephen Curry, in second place, earned $156 million. Boxer Tyson Fury completed the top three with a modest $146 million.

At the bottom of the list and a relative pauper on earnings of $53.6 million was New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson. This, according to Forbes, would have placed him sixth overall eight years ago since sports personality earnings are following an ever-upward trajectory. “Landing a spot on the exclusive list is harder than ever,” it said.
