Legendary Racing Champion Fights Dementia with Charity and Determination

Three-time Formula 1 champion, Sir Jackie Stewart, has recently shared his heartbreaking journey as he cares for his wife Lady Helen Stewart, who is battling dementia. In an emotional interview with the BBC, the 85-year-old racing legend spoke about the challenging moments they face together.

The Diagnosis and Its Impact

Sir Jackie recounted a chilling moment when Lady Helen asked him where he was, a question that marked the beginning of her struggle with dementia. Since her diagnosis in 2014, following a car accident, Sir Jackie has been by her side, providing care and support.

The disease has brought about changes in Lady Stewart’s behavior, including uncharacteristic aggression and the use of language she never used before. Sir Jackie admitted that he understands she doesn’t mean it when she lashes out or uses inappropriate language.

Understanding Sundowning

This change in behavior, a phenomenon known as sundowning, is common among people with dementia. They experience confusion, anxiety, and agitation in the late afternoon and evening. Specialist dementia care providers ensure their care adapts to this pattern. Lady Helen now resides in an accessible home in Switzerland, made possible by Sir Jackie’s successful racing career.

A Personal Mission: Race Against Dementia

Moved by his wife’s diagnosis and told there was nothing that could be done, Sir Jackie started the charity Race Against Dementia in 2016. He expressed his desire to find a cure during his lifetime, acknowledging it as a daunting task.

The charity has funded 18 researchers so far and is currently working on a blood test trial developed by Cambridge University. This trial aims to detect dementia 20 years before diagnosis. Sir Jackie’s determination mirrors his racing spirit, stating, “I want this [a cure] to happen just as much as I wanted to be world champion.
