Proposing Changes to Monaco Grand Prix Circuit for Improved Overtaking Opportunities

Legendary racetrack, the Monaco Grand Prix, has been a subject of debate in recent years due to the lack of overtaking opportunities. Former F1 driver and current Grand Prix Drivers’ Association chairman, Alex Wurz, has proposed a series of changes aimed at revitalizing this iconic event while maintaining its unique charm.

Proposed Changes for La Rascasse Corner

Wurz’s first proposal involves moving the apex of La Rascasse, the penultimate corner, out by two to three meters and widening the circuit boundary on the drivers’ left approach. This modification aims to create a dilemma for drivers ahead, forcing them to either defend their position or risk leaving the door open.

While this change is achievable given the built environment in this area, it could pose challenges such as creating a pinch point for pedestrians and affecting the access of drivers and team personnel to the pitlane from the paddock.

Proposed Changes for the Hairpin Corner

Wurz’s second proposal focuses on the famous hairpin corner, aiming to create more overtaking opportunities by widening its entry and exit. This modification would force drivers to compromise their entry to the corner to cover the inside line, thereby creating potential passing zones.

However, this change would mean the loss of a pedestrian path at the entry and pose challenges in widening the exit due to the need to remove a kerb and pedestrian footway, and build the road out to the boundary wall of the adjacent residential tower block.

Proposed Changes for Nouvelle Chicane

Wurz’s third proposal involves moving the Nouvelle Chicane 80 meters up the road towards Tabac. This change would enable a wider entry, create a straighter approach to the braking area, and potentially improve overtaking opportunities.

The major civil engineering challenge is that it would require the quay to be built out slightly into the harbor in the new location – a similar project was required to arrive at the present chicane arrangement.

Impact of Proposed Changes on Iconic Corners

Wurz emphasizes that these changes would not alter the character of the iconic corners like Tabac, preserving their challenge and appeal for drivers. He is confident that these modifications, if executed carefully, could breathe new life into the Monaco Grand Prix while maintaining its legendary status.
