Red Bull’s Confession: Rushing Driver Promotions

In a surprising turn of events, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has admitted that the team has occasionally advanced drivers prematurely. This revelation follows the team’s decision to transfer Liam Lawson back to its affiliate team, Racing Bulls, and replace him with Yuki Tsunoda.

The Controversial Move and Backlash

The shift from the Milton Keynes-based team has sparked controversy, with some critics arguing that Lawson deserved more time to demonstrate his potential, especially given Max Verstappen’s less-than-satisfactory feelings about the RB21.

While speaking to Sky Sports during a joint showrun in Tokyo yesterday, Horner clarified the decision, stating, “In previous years, we may have promoted drivers too soon. For instance, consider Alex Albon’s tenure… Pierre Gasly was fast-tracked at a time when Daniel Ricciardo moved to Renault.

Particularly within Red Bull Racing, perhaps we have moved our juniors too swiftly. However, that’s why we have a young driver program and a talent pool we are committed to nurturing and developing.” Horner added, “Seven of the current drivers on the grid have at one point passed through the Red Bull program.

Liam Lawson’s Reaction to Demotion

Lawson himself has acknowledged his demotion to Racing Bulls, expressing surprise at its early timing. In an interview with Motorsport.com ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, he stated, “I wasn’t expecting it so early in the season.” He continued, “For me, it’s about making the most of this opportunity now and continuing to be in Formula 1, as I still have that.

Although Lawson may find this move a hard pill to swallow, Racing Bulls has shown significant progress this year compared to its performance in 2024.
