Red Bull Racing is reportedly on the verge of making a major driver swap ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, with Yuki Tsunoda in line to replace Liam Lawson in the team’s main Formula 1 lineup. This potential move could have huge implications for both drivers and Red Bull’s season strategy.
Lawson Under Pressure After Tough Start
Liam Lawson has struggled in the early rounds of the F1 2025 season, crashing out in Australia and finishing 15th in China (later promoted to 12th after post-race penalties). The New Zealander has found it difficult to adapt to the RB21, which has been plagued by unpredictable handling and grip issues.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, despite faring better than his teammate, has admitted that defending his Formula 1 World Championship in the RB21 will be a major challenge.
Tsunoda’s Big Break at Red Bull?
According to sources, Red Bull is actively discussing a driver swap that would see Tsunoda move up to the main Red Bull team while Lawson returns to Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri). However, the move comes with complications.
Tsunoda, 24, has strong financial backing from Honda, Red Bull’s engine supplier. His potential promotion ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka would be a massive win for Honda’s home race and could trigger financial incentives.

Red Bull’s Tough Decision
Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, has publicly supported Lawson but admitted that the young Kiwi could benefit from more development time at Racing Bulls.
If the swap goes through, Tsunoda will finally get a shot in a top-tier F1 team after spending five seasons in Red Bull’s junior outfit. His solid performances have been hard to ignore, especially in contrast to Lawson’s underwhelming results.
This move also follows Red Bull’s controversial decision to replace Sergio Perez at the end of last season, despite the Mexican having a contract in place. Lawson was promoted as Perez’s replacement, but his performances so far have raised doubts about his long-term future with the team.
When Will Red Bull Confirm the Move?
An official announcement regarding the Tsunoda-Lawson swap is expected by the end of the week. If confirmed, this could be one of the biggest mid-season shake-ups in recent Formula 1 history.
