Formula 1 Driver Nico Hulkenberg Addresses Rumors of V10 Engine Return

Formula 1 driver Nico Hulkenberg has downplayed the recent discussions revolving around the potential reintroduction of V10 engines in Formula 1, as the sport focuses on utilizing sustainable fuel. In an interview with Motorsport.com prior to the Chinese Grand Prix, Hulkenberg shared his thoughts on the matter, particularly with Audi entering the grid for the new regulations starting from 2026.

Hulkenberg’s Take on the Return of V10 Engines

When asked about his feelings regarding this topic, Hulkenberg stated, “I don’t pay much attention to it. I’ve heard the speculations and rumors about it, but honestly, I don’t delve into it. I have no idea where that’s coming from.” He further explained that the power unit regulations for the upcoming year are already well-established, and teams are deeply engrossed in their development.

Hulkenberg added, “The regulations for the future, for however many years to come, have been outlined. So I think it’s just noise. Personally, I don’t give much credence to it now.”

FIA and F1 CEO’s View on V10 Engines

The idea of reintroducing the iconic V10 engines has been brought up by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who stated at the F1 75 launch event that they should be considered for the sport’s future. He emphasized the importance of leading the way in future technological trends in motorsport, including the potential use of sustainable fuel with the roaring sound of V10 engines.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also expressed a similar sentiment, suggesting that if sustainable fuel can effectively achieve zero emissions, there might be no need for further complexities or high costs in engine development. He hinted at the possibility of returning to lighter engines with an appealing sound.
