Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race Halted Amidst Torrential Downpour

The much-anticipated Miami Grand Prix sprint race has hit a wet snag! Heavy rain showers have drenched the Formula 1 circuit at the Miami Autodrome, forcing a suspension of Saturday afternoon’s 19-lap sprint race.

Race Start Delayed Due to Excessive Rain and Poor Visibility

The rain showers started early in the morning, making it necessary for the race to begin behind the safety car. However, after two formation laps, it became evident that the visibility and standing water were still far too excessive to continue. As a result, the FIA race control decided to suspend the starting procedure and throw a red flag.

McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri, who was second in line, described the visibility as “terrible,” reporting rivers on the track at Turn 10. Charles Leclerc, unfortunately, failed to make the start after crashing out on his way to the grid, aquaplaning off the road in his Ferrari while on intermediate tyres.

Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli is set to defend his sprint pole from McLaren‘s championship leader Piastri, with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen on the second row. The drivers have vacated their cars, and the starting procedure will recommence at 12:28 local time.
