Mercedes Formula 1 Rookie Struggles with Energy Management at Homecoming Weekend

Mercedes Formula 1 rookie, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, admitted that the excitement surrounding his homecoming weekend at Imola left him feeling drained. Despite the anticipation, his first grand prix start on Italian soil didn’t meet expectations as he struggled with confidence in the car and battled excessive tyre overheating.

A Mixed Bag of Results

Team-mate George Russell managed to salvage seventh place, while Antonelli initially held off Lewis Hamilton during the first stint but retired due to a throttle issue. The weekend was an anticlimax for Antonelli after a grand build-up that included celebrating Bologna FC’s domestic cup success and inviting all his classmates to the paddock.

Despite enjoying the fan support, Antonelli admitted that he struggled to manage his energy levels, which affected his performance on the track. He felt more tense while driving and realized the need to learn when to say no and take time for himself.

A Learning Experience for All

Team representative Bradley Lord acknowledged that both Mercedes and Antonelli will be taking lessons from the Imola weekend as they balance out his schedule during his rookie campaign. They aim to understand what energized him and what felt like overload, adapting their approach for busy race weekends, especially for the next home race in Italy in September.
