Building Strong Connections: Sainz’s Plan with New Race Engineer Gaëtan Jego

After concluding a four-year journey in Maranello, former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has embarked on a new chapter with the Grove outfit, Williams, starting from 2025. With Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at his previous team, Sainz decided to partner Alex Albon at Williams for the upcoming seasons.

Navigating Challenges in a New Team

Despite Albon securing 10 points for Williams with a fifth-place finish in the season-opener in Australia, Sainz faced an unfortunate crash on the opening lap due to wet weather conditions. In China, while interacting with the media, the Spanish driver shared his strategy to strengthen his bond with his new race engineer, Gaëtan Jego.

When asked about any similarities with Hamilton’s experience of adapting to a new Ferrari race engineer, Sainz explained: “The only difference is that unfortunately for me, I didn’t get to drive such a demanding race from a communications perspective in Australia, and I missed the opportunity to build on it with my engineer.” He further added, “We need to review this race and go through it together as I was driving it because this is exactly the kind of race where I think I can make a difference as a driver if you help me read the situation well, and we could have got a good result like in this case, Alex did.”

Sainz plans to replicate his crash in Melbourne to help improve his relationship with Jego. He stated, “If we communicate well and go through this race at some point back at base, it will ensure that we’ve actually raced the race because we missed an incredible chance to build upon it.” With 23 races left in the 2025 F1 season, Sainz is eager to make the most of each opportunity to strengthen his bond with Jego.

As the second round of the 2025 F1 season approaches – the Chinese Grand Prix – Sainz prepares for a challenging weekend in Shanghai. The race weekend will also feature the first sprint race of the year, meaning that he will only have one practice session to prepare for an action-packed racing schedule.
