Commemorating Ayrton Senna’s First Formula 1 Victory with a Unique Jersey
In an extraordinary tribute to the late Brazilian racing legend, Ayrton Senna, Portuguese football club GD Estoril Praia donned a one-of-a-kind jersey during their Saturday night match. The special uniform, adorned in the iconic colors of yellow and blue, was designed to honor Senna’s historic first Grand Prix win at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix.
A Tribute to the Legendary Lotus 97T
The unique kit also paid homage to the legendary Lotus 97T in its famous John Player Special livery, incorporating black and gold into the design. Unfortunately, this special edition jersey didn’t bring GD Estoril Praia much luck during their home league match against Sporting Braga, as they lost 0-2.
Despite the loss, Portugal’s top division has seen GD Estoril Praia in ninth place, while Sporting Braga currently holds third position. The small coastal town west of Lisbon, which once hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix from 1984 to 1996, was a significant tourist attraction due to its mild climate and unique charm.
Senna’s Unforgettable Victory in Estoril
In 1985, however, the weather didn’t cooperate, and Senna showcased an unforgettable masterclass in the art of racing in the rain to claim his first victory. All subsequent Grand Prix races in Estoril were then held in September.
A Second Home for Ayrton Senna
Senna developed a strong connection with Portugal, owning a house in Quinta do Lago, located in the Algarve in the country’s south. The linguistic and culinary ties to his native Brazil made him feel particularly at home there. In Estoril, a memorial plaque at the circuit entrance in front of the main grandstand still commemorates Senna’s special connection to the place of his first F1 triumph.
Despite the emotional tribute, the special jersey won’t be making its way into fans’ closets due to licensing issues – much to the disappointment of Ayrton Senna’s devoted followers.
