The FIA has released comprehensive information on the “work of public interest” that Max Verstappen must perform as a consequence of his inappropriate language during the drivers’ press conference at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s public interest duty after his offensive language
In September, the four-time world champion was summoned by the stewards after using offensive language when describing his car to journalists. The officials concluded that this behavior breached the International Sporting Code.
While previous incidents of foul language from drivers were met with financial penalties, the stewards opted for a more significant measure in Verstappen’s case. Instead of a simple fine, he is now “obliged to accomplish some work of public interest” to address his misconduct.
After the season finale in Abu Dhabi, the FIA confirmed that Verstappen’s assigned community service will be carried out in Rwanda. His visit to the East African nation coincides with the FIA Awards Ceremony, where he will collect the trophy for his drivers’ championship triumph, having secured a 63-point lead over Lando Norris.
Taking place on Friday, December 13, in Kigali—Rwanda’s capital—during the General Assemblies, Verstappen’s public service will involve working directly with up-and-coming motorsport competitors. This effort will form part of a grassroots development initiative led by the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), which constructed an Affordable Cross Car using technical blueprints provided by the FIA.
