Strong feelings are running high in F1 circles about Oliver Bearman, the 19-year-old Briton who’s made a name for himself with impressive performances behind the wheel. As part of the Haas team’s driver programme, Bearman is set to make his full-time F1 debut this season, and it seems like no one has bigger plans for him than Ayao Komatsu, Haas team principal.

Bearman’s Road to Ferrari

After a string of stellar performances during FP1 sessions for Haas in 2023 and 2024, Bearman has been shipped out on loan to the Italian team. He’s also filled in for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari when the Spaniard had appendicitis. Bearman defied expectations to bring home a seventh-place finish in the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP, earning him plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

But Komatsu has never doubted Bearman’s potential from the moment he debuted for Haas at the Mexico City GP. “Yes, he is a Ferrari driver,” the team principal said with conviction. “We’ve got him for two years – plus an option for an extra one – and if we do a good job and Ollie does a good job, there’s no way Ferrari can ignore that.”

The Approach

Komatsu has been impressed by Bearman’s approach to his driving, both on and off the track. “Every time he gets in the car, his feedback’s been excellent,” the team principal said. “The approach has been excellent, speed has been great.” Bearman has out-qualified even Nico Hulkenberg, a former Haas driver who was once considered a benchmark for the team.

Komatsu’s enthusiasm for Bearman is infectious, and it’s clear that he’s eager to see how the young driver progresses in his F1 career. He’s set to meet with Ferrari in February to discuss their plans for monitoring Bearman’s development – but Komatsu hopes to get some valuable feedback from his new friends at Maranello.

“I’m sure Ferrari want regular feedback,” Komatsu said. “I’d like to give them feedback as well, because they have been a crucial part of Ollie’s career… so any help we can get from that side would be beneficial as well.” It seems like Bearman has found himself in good hands – and the future looks bright for this talented young driver.

For now, fans will just have to wait and see how Bearman fares on the track. But with Komatsu’s backing and Ferrari’s support, it’s hard not to be optimistic about his prospects. Will he live up to the hype? Only time will tell – but one thing’s for sure: Oliver Bearman is a name that’s here to stay.
