Formula 1 Driver Charles Leclerc Discusses Sprint Qualifying Struggles
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has shared his challenges during the sprint qualifying in China, while teammate Lewis Hamilton secured his first pole position with the team. Despite Hamilton’s success, Leclerc revealed that technical issues in Turns 1-3 were a significant factor contributing to his fourth-place start for tomorrow’s sprint race.
Leclerc’s Struggles at Shanghai International Circuit
In an interview with the media, Leclerc admitted facing similar difficulties he experienced during the Shanghai International Circuit in 2024. “I struggled on my side of the garage,” he said. “From the beginning, I felt a step behind Lewis, and he was simply faster today.” He further explained that he faced significant challenges in Turns 1, 2, and 3, which were the same struggles he had experienced previously.
Apart from these issues, Leclerc mentioned that everything else was tight. However, starting in P4 is a disappointment for him, as Hamilton takes pole position. He expressed hope for a good race tomorrow.
Alleged Breach of FIA Regulations
In addition to his qualifying struggles, Leclerc has been summoned to the stewards for an alleged breach of FIA regulations. The FIA statement reads as follows: “Alleged breach of Article 33.4 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Article 12.2.1 i) of the FIA International Sporting Code (non-compliance with the Race Director’s Event Notes, item 2, document 11).”
Article 33.4 of the sporting regulations states that a car should not be driven unnecessarily slowly, erratically, or in a manner potentially dangerous to other drivers or any person. At the time of writing, the stewards have yet to reach a verdict.
Grid Positions for Sprint Race
Hamilton will share the front row with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the sprint race. Oscar Piastri will start third, followed by Leclerc in fourth. The third row features George Russell in fifth and Lando Norris in sixth.
As the first sprint race weekend of the year, Leclerc has another chance to improve his grid position tomorrow. The sprint race takes place in the morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon to determine the start for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
