Young Driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli Discusses Meeting Formula 1 Icon Kimi Raikkonen

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the rookie driver who recently joined Mercedes following Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, shared an intriguing tale during a recent press conference in Bahrain. When asked about his encounter with the racing legend whose middle name he shares, the young driver had an interesting story to tell.

The First Encounter with ‘The Iceman’

Antonelli recounted, ‘The first time I met him, I realized why they call him ‘The Iceman.’ I approached him feeling quite excited, but he showed no reaction whatsoever. Yet, I found him to be a really cool guy. I didn’t have the opportunity for a proper conversation with him then, but I would love to. I believe it would be filled with valuable racing advice.’

Raikkonen earned his nickname during his Formula 1 tenure from 2001 to 2009 due to his straightforward attitude, candid responses, and famously blunt interactions with the media, traits that endeared him to fans. When asked about Antonelli’s upcoming role in the 2025 season during Raikkonen’s return to the F1 paddock in Monza last year, he had this to say.

Kimi Raikkonen on Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Debut

‘Yes, I heard about it! When we arrived here, someone mentioned that they announced it,’ the 2007 F1 champion told F1.com. ‘It’s fantastic. It seems like a lot of new faces will join next year, many new drivers who have signed with F1. It’s great for the sport, and it’s also wonderful to have an Italian in the championship. I think it’s beneficial for everyone,’ he added.

Raikkonen further expressed his confidence in Mercedes‘ ability to prepare Antonelli, acknowledging the advancements in technology since his own debut. ‘I’m sure [] know how to get him ready. Obviously, these days they have simulators. When I started, there was no simulator; you just jumped in and got going!’ he said.

Raikkonen concluded by wishing Antonelli and all the newcomers luck, expressing his belief that it would be easier to transition into F1 now compared to when he started due to the increased opportunities for testing and preparation.
