Max Verstappen Triumphs at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen clinched a thrilling victory at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, disrupting McLaren‘s winning streak with an outstanding performance. Lando Norris finished second, while Oscar Piastri settled for third.
Dramatic Race Twists and Turns
From a second-place start on the grid, Verstappen masterfully overtook polesitter Oscar Piastri at Tamburello’s first braking zone with an impressive move. Piastri opted for an early pit stop, switching from medium to hard tires on lap 14. A similar strategy was adopted by George Russell, which opened up clear air for Lando Norris.
Red Bull’s tire wear seemed more promising than expected, with Verstappen losing a mere two to three tenths per lap to the chasing McLaren. However, the race took an unexpected turn on lap 29 due to a virtual safety car triggered by Esteban Ocon’s stranded Haas between Variante Alta and Rivazza.
The virtual safety car advantage favored those yet to pit, including Verstappen. Norris had pitted the previous lap, losing ground in the process. As the race resumed on lap 31, Verstappen’s lead over Norris grew to 20 seconds. Alexander Albon also benefited, moving up to third ahead of Piastri.
Norris struggled to close the gap on Verstappen, while Piastri swiftly moved up to third but was already falling behind his teammate by more than 12 seconds. The stalemate didn’t last long, as another safety car was triggered on lap 47 due to Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s retirement from eighth position.
Verstappen pitted for a second set of hard tires, as did Norris. Piastri stayed out, setting the stage for a tense 10-lap shootout when the field was released on Lap 54. On fresher tires, Norris quickly overtook his teammate, but he couldn’t prevent Verstappen from securing his second win of the season.
Ferrari Redeems Itself After Qualifying Disaster
Despite a disastrous qualifying session that saw Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton starting 11th and 12th, Ferrari put on a competitive show. Both drivers made good starts but faced challenges under the first virtual safety car situation.
Leclerc initially looked set to lose out, only to benefit from staying out under the late safety car. He ultimately couldn’t hold onto fourth position on his older tires, causing a collision with Albon at Tamburello that also affected Hamilton.
Hamilton passed Leclerc, who was then instructed to let Albon through to avoid any potential five-second penalty for the earlier incident. The Monegasque finished sixth behind the Thai driver. Russell and Sainz completed a double points finish for Williams, with Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar in 8th place.
After a violent crash in qualifying, Yuki Tsunoda produced a spirited drive to climb to 10th despite running a one-stop strategy. Aston Martin was the biggest loser of the day, with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll dropping out of the points after a tyre gamble that left them lacking crucial hard tires for the safety car-interrupted race.
Piastri maintains his lead in the championship, heading Norris by 13 points and Verstappen by 22. The F1 paddock now heads down to Monaco for the second part of a European triple-header.
