Lewis Hamilton’s Father to Assume Role at the FIA
Lewis Hamilton’s father, Anthony Hamilton, is set to assume an official role within the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) as part of their young driver program. This development was first reported by The Times and subsequently verified by Motorsport.com.
Hamilton Sr’s Role in FIA’s Young Driver Development Pathway
Over the past 18 months, Anthony Hamilton has been working in an advisory capacity for the FIA. His role will become official at next month’s FIA conference in Macau, where the governing body will launch the FIA’s Young Driver Development Pathway. The aim is to streamline the path from grassroots racing to a professional career for young drivers.
Hamilton’s new position within the FIA is not expected to influence Lewis Hamilton’s feelings towards the organization’s leadership, as the seven-time world champion has had disagreements with the current president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, on several occasions.
Controversies Surrounding FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem
Last year, Ben Sulayem implemented stricter rules against swearing on team radio, which Lewis Hamilton criticized, expressing concerns over racial undertones in the president’s remarks. More recently, Ben Sulayem softened the initial penalties for swearing, sparking debate among drivers.
Upcoming FIA Presidential Election and Potential Competition
Ben Sulayem is due to stand for re-election at the end of the year, with no official challenger announced as yet. Meanwhile, another Formula 1 (F1) driver’s father, Carlos Sainz Sr, has expressed interest in running for president after receiving encouragement from figures within the motorsport community.
The senior Sainz has not made a final decision regarding his candidacy, with both father and son dismissing concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
Driver’s Perspective on FIA Rule Changes
When asked about the swearing rules changes, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton’s former Mercedes teammate, expressed skepticism, stating that they have yet to receive any communication from senior FIA officials.
Other drivers, including Ferrari driver Hamilton, have also voiced their concerns over the situation, calling for willingness and change from the FIA.
