Max Verstappen’s Future Beyond Red Bull: A Closer Look
Former Formula 1 champion, Damon Hill, has suggested that it could be a wise move for current Red Bull driver, Max Verstappen, to explore options outside of the Milton Keynes outfit. Despite being contractually bound until 2028, speculation about Verstappen’s future with the team has been rife.
The Debate Surrounding Verstappen’s Contract and Future
As with any Formula 1 contract, there are exit clauses on both sides. Red Bull’s current struggles, the impending regulation change in 2026, and the departures of Adrian Newey and Honda from the team have only served to intensify speculation about Verstappen’s future.
During a recent appearance on the BBC Chequered Flag podcast, Hill discussed Verstappen’s potential moves, including the possibility of joining Mercedes or taking a break to assess the performance of teams under the new regulations.
The Performance Clause and Verstappen’s Freedom
Red Bull are fighting to retain Max Verstappen,” argued Hill. “There is a clause in the contract, and if they don’t match the performance clause, he’s free to go wherever he wants.” Hill emphasized that Red Bull are under pressure due to this performance clause, which could potentially be triggered if the team fails to meet expectations.
Verstappen’s current position in the drivers’ standings, third with 99 points and 32 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, further fuels speculation about his future.
Potential Destinations for Verstappen: Mercedes and Beyond
Hill expressed uncertainty about where Verstappen could go if he decides to leave Red Bull. He suggested that George Russell, who is reportedly on the verge of re-signing with Mercedes, may block out that option.
However, Hill believes that Verstappen could take a break next year to understand the performance of teams under the new regulations before making his next move. “He’s young, he’s won four world championships, he’s won goodness how many races,” Hill said. “Nobody knows what’s on the other side of the end of this season. What is going to happen? He could sit back next year and go, OK, I can see which way the future’s going to go for the next 10 years and whatever team is doing well will find the money to pay for having Max.
