LEGO’s Amazing 1:1 Scale Cars at the Miami Grand Prix
Get ready for a thrilling blend of technology and creativity! The Miami Grand Prix was not just about high-speed racing this year. All 20 drivers took part in an extraordinary event – a drivers’ parade, but not on their usual vehicles. Instead, they were accompanied by fully-drivable LEGO replicas of their cars!
A Tour Inside LEGO’s Big Build Factory in the Czech Republic
Earlier this year, we had an exclusive tour of one of LEGO’s massive build factories located in Kladno, a small town on the outskirts of Prague. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by some of LEGO’s top designers and engineers who guided us through the factory and shared their plans to construct all 10 F1 cars brick-by-brick.
Just like the real vehicles, each LEGO car was unique, meticulously designed to resemble its real-life counterpart as closely as possible using LEGO bricks. These life-sized builds were nearly 1:1 scale and contained almost 400,000 bricks each, weighing a hefty 1,000kg. The precision was astounding, with every detail – from the Pirelli tyres to the sponsor logos and aerodynamic curves – recreated in intricate detail.
What made these cars even more impressive was their ability to move! Capable of reaching 20 km/h, they were designed as two-seaters so all 20 drivers could join the parade. Over 22,000 hours of collective effort from a team of 26 – designers, engineers, and master LEGO builders – went into creating this fleet.
The Drivers’ Impressive Reaction
As the cars made their way onto the grid ahead of Sunday’s race, the drivers seemed to be transported back to their earlier years. They were genuinely impressed by the LEGO machinery. George Russell even joked about using the vehicles as “bumper cars,” but after learning how many hours were spent building them, he decided against it.
