LEGO Formula 1 Cars Replace Traditional Truck for Miami Grand Prix Parade

The world of Formula 1 is innovating its approach to building an American fanbase, as it swaps the traditional driver parade truck with bespoke LEGO cars for the Miami Grand Prix. Each team has a fully driveable, nearly full-scale LEGO replica that the 20 drivers will complete the parade lap with before Sunday’s race.

LEGO Replicas Built to Scale and Team Colors

Crafted as close as possible to their real-life counterparts, each car was made using nearly 400,000 LEGO bricks and comes in the individual colors of the teams, with the correct livery and corresponding sponsors. The cars will complete a full 5.4km lap of the Miami Gardens track as part of F1’s multi-year partnership with LEGO.

Speaking about the partnership, Julia Goldin, LEGO Group chief product and marketing officer, said, “At the LEGO Group, we have a proud history of recreating many F1 cars in LEGO brick form. This new partnership will bring the spectacle of this sport even closer to all fans.” She added that it would allow fans to celebrate their passion for the sport in more immersive and exciting ways.

Drivers Impressed by LEGO Machines, Jokes About Bumper Cars

The drivers seemed impressed by the LEGO machines as they made their way onto the grid following a downpour. George Russell joked about using them as “bumper cars,” while some attempts at overtaking were made as the competitive nature of the drivers threatened to take over. Lewis Hamilton commented, “That was the most fun drivers parade we’ve ever had, some dirty driving, it was great fun.

Max Verstappen added, “I do think they will have to sweep the track, there is some LEGO debris! We were a bit slow in top speed and we slowly dropped back, but I think it’s more important they clean the track!

LEGO F1 Speed Champions Range Inspires the Design

Based on the LEGO F1 Speed Champions range, each car was created by a team of 26 designers and engineers at the company’s Kladno site in the Czech Republic.
