Lewis Hamilton Advocates for the F1 Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA)

In a bold move, seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has spearheaded calls for the establishment of a drivers’ union to exert influence over the sport’s governance. During his recent visit to Miami, Hamilton emphasized the need for such an organization to ensure that drivers can contribute to shaping the future of the sport.

A Union for Drivers: The Need for Change

This push comes in response to a power struggle between drivers and the sport’s governing body, the FIA, over stringent rules regarding swearing. The FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has been firm on punishing drivers for their language during press conferences. However, he has shown signs of reconsideration, acknowledging constructive feedback from drivers worldwide and expressing openness to making improvements.

When asked about the GPDA’s relationship with the FIA ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Hamilton stated, “Ultimately, the GPDA is very unified. We are working towards being able to work closely with the FIA. All of us want to make the sport work together and make it better.” He further added, “Of course, we’ve faced communication challenges over time. Ultimately, we don’t hold a power seat at the table, and that needs to change in my opinion. If you look at other sports with unions, that may be something that comes into play at some stage. We don’t want to control things; we just want our voices heard.

Hamilton emphasized the importance of having a driver’s perspective when making decisions affecting the sport. Last season, Max Verstappen was penalized for swearing during a live press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix, and this year, Hyundai World Rally Championship driver Adrien Fourmaux faced punishment for breaching new rules regarding swearing.
