Aston Martin’s Challenges in the 2025 Formula 1 Season

The 2025 Formula 1 season has been a tough one for Aston Martin, with the team scoring only 10 points over the first four races. The team, once regular podium finishers, is now grappling with upgrades, new regulations, and in-house gearbox development, all of which are impacting their results this year.

Preparing for Formula 1’s New Rules in 2026

Mike Krack, Aston Martin‘s chief trackside officer, has revealed that the team’s early struggles in 2025 have been exacerbated by the “double burden” of preparing for Formula 1’s new rules coming into force next year. The British outfit will be switching engine manufacturers from Mercedes and will be responsible for its own gearboxes, a significant undertaking for a team that has had a customer relationship with Mercedes since 2009.

Under the budget cap, teams like Aston Martin are finding it challenging to decide where best to deploy resources. Krack admits, “We have the ‘26 regulations coming, we have a couple more races with these regulations and it doesn’t help to stir in that now and find out what went right and what went wrong.” The team is still working on development and will introduce new components when ready.

Navigating the Complexities of Formula 1 Regulations

Krack further explained, “We are also in a bit of a special case, we will change our engine manufacturer and we make our own gearbox [in 2026]. That’s all not helping, so we have to balance these things.” The complexities are compounded under Formula 1’s budget cap, leaving teams like Aston Martin scrambling for resources.

Krack emphasizes the need to get out of their current slump “as quick as possible” and turn things around. Despite rivals Alpine showing promise with Pierre Gasly picking up 10 points for the French side in a recent race, Aston Martin‘s drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have yet to score a point this season.

The team is facing an uphill battle as it fights for every point it can manage. Krack remains optimistic, saying, “We are still working on the development, when there is something ready then we’ll bring it.” With the 2025 season far from over, Aston Martin will be hoping to turn their fortunes around soon.
