Potential Saudi Investment in a Formula 1 Team
Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal has hinted at the possibility of Saudi Arabia investing in a Formula 1 team, expressing his interest in this venture. The country’s growing involvement in motorsports partnerships, such as Aramco and Maaden’s sponsorship of the Aston Martin F1 team, and the Public Investment Fund’s collaboration with Formula E, underscores its increasing interest in the world of racing.
The Prospect of a Saudi-Owned Team
During a recent interview with reporters, including Motorsport.com, Prince Khalid acknowledged the potential for a Saudi or PIF-led team. He admitted that while it could be a challenging step, the opportunity to invest in Formula 1, given its global growth and increasing sales, is appealing.
However, Prince Khalid emphasized that the decision would not be easy, requiring careful consideration of which team to buy and how to manage it effectively. He expressed his hope for a successful Saudi team should the investment materialize.
Saudi Arabia’s Position on the F1 Calendar
Last year, Saudi Arabia hosted the second Formula 1 race following the season-opener in Bahrain. This year, the two grands prix have been moved to the third and fourth spots to avoid clashing with Ramadan. Although the 2026 calendar has not yet been finalized, Saudi is keen to become the first round of the championship, bringing increased exposure and prestige to the race.
Prince Khalid expressed his desire for Saudi Arabia to host the opening race, acknowledging the challenges posed by the weather. He suggested that if it’s not possible to be the opening race, then a position in the middle of the season might be more suitable. He also mentioned that the beginning of the season is beneficial for sales in Saudi Arabia, as fans are more excited at this time.
Despite the challenges, Prince Khalid remains optimistic about Saudi Arabia’s future involvement in Formula 1, hoping for a successful and well-managed team should the investment materialize.
