Yuki Tsunoda Discusses Difficulties in Tuning Red Bull RB21 Setup
Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda has shared his struggles in finding the perfect setup for the Red Bull RB21 after stepping into the team for the Japanese Grand Prix. With limited time behind the wheel and multiple disruptions during practice sessions, Tsunoda finds himself in a learning curve.
Limited Time and Practice Disruptions Impact Learning Process
The practice sessions at Suzuka were marred by Jack Doohan’s crash, Fernando Alonso beaching his AMR25, and numerous grass fires causing red flags. These disruptions have limited Tsunoda’s time in the car, making it challenging for him to adapt quickly.
Speaking to F1.com ahead of Bahrain, Tsunoda explained that he may need to approach the car setup differently compared to what he was accustomed to with Racing Bulls. “I’ve just done four, five sessions, almost four sessions because of lots of red flags,” he said.
The Japanese driver further added, “The car is able to achieve the same balance that I used to have at Racing Bulls, but it not always helps the performance. I just have to dig in further, I just don’t know what set-up will make the car faster.” He likened the process to a science lab with unpredictable results.
Goals for Bahrain Grand Prix
For this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Tsunoda aims to qualify for Q3 and secure points. Despite his ambitions of podium finishes, he acknowledges the car’s high-performance window can be challenging. “I have to still learn about the car,” he said. “If I get points or [can] be closer to Max to help him in the race, and go into Q3, that would be a good target.
Tsunoda joined Red Bull after a four-year stint with its sister team. The team has opted for rookie driver Liam Lawson to drive alongside Max Verstappen in 2025. However, the team decided to demote Lawson to Racing Bulls just two race weekends into the season.
