Rookie Driver Gabriel Bortoleto Faces Unexpected Obstacles in Formula 1

Gabriel Bortoleto, the rookie driver for the Audi-owned Sauber squad, has admitted that his transition from a successful Formula 2 (F2) campaign to the back of the grid in Formula 1 has been tougher than anticipated. With two consecutive junior titles under his belt in F2 and F3, Bortoleto earned his promotion to Formula 1 this year.

Sauber’s Struggles and Bortoleto’s Performance

The Swiss team, struggling to make progress from its 2024 dismal performances, has yet to show significant improvement. In Australia, Nico Hulkenberg managed to capitalize on a chaotic mixed-weather race to secure seventh place, but neither he nor Bortoleto have been in a position to challenge the top 10.

Bortoleto was aware of the challenges ahead, but admitted that the reality has been tougher than he anticipated as he adjusts his mindset from frequent podium finishes to fighting for a single point.

The Mental Shift and Adjustment

It’s very tough if I’m honest,” Bortoleto said when asked about the difference in mindset by Motorsport.com. “It’s tough because I come from two very good years in my life, where I won F3 and F2.

He further explained that the transition is tougher due to the change in driving dynamics. When one is accustomed to winning, the mindset shifts towards potential victories during race weekends. However, in their current position, such possibilities are not present.

We are very realistic that we are not able to win,” he admitted. “And for any driver – but I can say for myself – it’s very tough. Because I’m not here to be last, I’m not here to be P10. I’m here to try to win, like everyone else.

The Audi F1 Project and Bortoleto’s Ambitions

Despite the challenging start, Bortoleto remains optimistic about his future with Audi. With Audi’s official Formula 1 entry on the horizon, including its own power unit for the new regulations, he sees this as an opportunity to grow and contribute to the German brand.

I didn’t come to Formula 1 thinking I would be straight away fighting for race wins or podiums,” he explained. “The Audi F1 project, it’s an honor to be part of and it’s very clear where we want to be in the amount of years we think we can achieve that.

His focus remains on hard work, perseverance, and continuous improvement, ensuring they are ready for opportunities when they arise. “That’s not the case right now, but we are growing in that direction,” he said.

Accepting the Current Position and Moving Forward

Bortoleto emphasized the importance of accepting their current position and avoiding self-criticism or disappointment. He believes that such negative emotions can lead to worse performance. Instead, he is focusing on learning from each race and improving his skills for future opportunities.
