Carlos Sainz Faces Financial Penalty for Delay at National Anthem
Williams driver Carlos Sainz has been hit with a €20,000 fine by the Formula One (F1) governing body, the FIA, due to his tardiness during the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix’s national anthem. The delay was caused by a stomach upset, which had affected Sainz’s performance with his new Grove machinery this season.
Violation of FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations
According to the FIA’s published document, Sainz failed to be in position for the national anthem at the specified time of 1344hrs before his Suzuka campaign. This breached Article 19.4 b) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.
Despite medical verification of his stomach issues by Dr. Messina of Med-Ex prior to the race, and medication administration, Sainz arrived at the national anthem position after the anthem had begun.
Mitigating Circumstances Considered
During the drivers’ briefing on Friday, all drivers were reminded of the requirement to be in position by the time prescribed in the regulations and the need to show respect for the host country’s anthem. The mitigating circumstances meant that the usual penalty of €60,000 wasn’t given.
The report confirmed that displaying respect for the national anthem is a high priority, and all parties must consider every eventuality in planning to be in position for the anthem by the required time.
