Max Verstappen Takes Spectacular Pole Position at Suzuka Despite Red Bull’s Ongoing Issues
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has stunned the Formula 1 circuit by securing a stunning pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix, despite ongoing troubles with his Red Bull car. The Dutch driver, bidding for his fourth consecutive pole at Suzuka, faced stiff competition from McLaren‘s dominant form and balance issues with his own vehicle.
Verstappen Pulls Off a Miraculous Final Lap in Q3
Despite a lackluster performance throughout qualifying, Verstappen managed to pull off an incredible final lap in Q3, defeating Lando Norris by a mere 0.012 seconds and Oscar Piastri by 0.044s. His pole lap of 1m26.983s was half a second quicker than his previous effort in Q2.
Verstappen erupted in joy on his team radio after securing the surprise pole, hailing it as one of his best laps ever in an F1 car. “There was a lot of happiness when I crossed the line,” he said. “We just tried to keep improving our situation a bit. I was fully committed everywhere.
The Dutchman admitted that his pole lap flattered the Red Bull RB21, as the car’s handling issues are still present. “It was a lot better than Friday but the through corner balance is still what we need to work on,” he explained. Despite this, Verstappen expressed his delight with his performance, especially considering the challenging start to the season.
Verstappen cautioned that while his pole lap was impressive, it did not mask the underlying issues with his car. “On low fuel over one lap some bits you can mask a little bit, but I still don’t go into the lap fully confident and comfortable,” he admitted. Despite these challenges, Verstappen remains optimistic about solving the problems, although he acknowledged that it is not an easy task at present.
