Williams Team Principal Confident About Sainz’s Adaptation to New Car

After two race weekends into the 2025 Formula 1 season, Spanish driver Carlos Sainz is still fine-tuning his skills with the Williams FW46. During a live broadcast on Sky Sports F1, team chief James Vowles expressed confidence in Sainz’s ability to adapt swiftly.

Driving Style Challenges and Adaptation

Vowles acknowledged that Sainz has brought over a specific driving style from his previous stint with Ferrari, which poses a challenge for the Williams team. He explained, “Our cars don’t allow as much combination on the front axle as does, and Alex [Albon] has learned to drive around it in the last few years.”

Despite this initial hurdle, Vowles noted that Sainz is making progress. He added, “You saw Carlos here was nearly on the money again. He wasn’t at the track during testing, so we’ve found something, but I want to make sure it translates through to qualifying before we say anything more.

Comparison with Lewis Hamilton’s Adaptation

When compared to Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation to Ferrari machinery, Vowles stated, “It’s exactly the same thing but inverse. The direction you go down to get your package, your downforce, your vehicle dynamics is different in concept and philosophy.” He emphasized that while it takes time, both drivers will eventually adapt.

Dispelling Rumors About Chassis

Addressing rumors about Sainz running on a repaired chassis from 2024, Vowles clarified, “There is no difference between the two chassis.” He explained that even significant accidents don’t inflict damage beyond the car’s testing capacity.

Sainz’s Adaptation Timeline

Contradicting Sainz’s self-imposed five to 10 race adaptation timeline, Vowles expressed surprise at the suggestion. He asserted, “I’d be shocked if he needs five races. The way he operates, the way he thinks, the way he works, I know how he adapts his driving style. He won’t need that long. He’ll be on the money you’ll see pretty quickly.
