Mario Andretti Discusses Cadillac’s Driver Lineup Strategy for 2026 Season
Legendary racing icon, 1978 Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti, has shared intriguing insights into the driver selection process for the upcoming 2026 season at Cadillac. Andretti hinted that former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez could be a strong contender for the team.
Cadillac’s Entry into Formula One and Partnership with Ferrari
General Motors, operating under its iconic Cadillac branding, has received formal approval from Formula One Management to debut as an 11th team in 2026. The automotive giant will initially collaborate with Ferrari for powertrain support before transitioning into a full-fledged GM works team by 2028.
The recent shakeup at Red Bull, with the replacement of Liam Lawson after only two Grands Prix in the 2025 F1 season, has fueled speculation about Perez’s potential comeback. Red Bull decided to part ways with Perez at the end of 2024, and Lawson filled his spot for the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix.
Andretti’s Comments on Potential Driver Lineup
During an appearance on the ESPN Racing podcast, Andretti expressed his thoughts on the driver selection process:
Andretti further emphasized the importance of selecting an experienced driver for the second seat, stating: “And we all know that the selection in that regard is quite clear.” He hinted at a pool of three potential drivers without revealing their identities.
Is Sergio Perez an Option?
When asked about Perez’s chances, Andretti replied: “It’s an option. It could be an option. Of course. All I can say is that Liam Lawson is making Checo look very, very good.” Andretti also mentioned IndyCar driver Colton Herta as a potential candidate for the Cadillac team in the past.
