Red Bull Racing Makes a Shocking Decision Regarding Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda
Red Bull Racing has taken an unexpected turn in its driver lineup for the 2025 season. The team, based in Milton Keynes, initially planned to promote Liam Lawson to drive alongside four-time champion Max Verstappen, instead of Yuki Tsunoda who had spent four full seasons with the sister team. However, after just two race weekends, Lawson is moving to Racing Bulls, and Tsunoda will take his place from the Japanese Grand Prix onwards.
Father’s Supportive Response to Liam Lawson’s Move
Jos Verstappen, father of the four-time champion, responded positively to the news, welcoming Lawson to Racing Bulls via a post on their platform. He expressed his hope that Lawson would do “a fantastic job” and acknowledged that he “deserves to be in F1.”
Christian Horner’s Explanation for the Decision
Team principal Christian Horner described the decision as a “sporting decision,” emphasizing Red Bull Racing’s commitment to defending the drivers’ championship and reclaiming the constructors’ title. He explained that it had been challenging for Lawson to adapt to the RB21 at the first two races, leading to the collective decision to make an early switch.
Horner further stated that Yuki Tsunoda’s experience with the current car would be beneficial in helping to develop the RB21. He welcomed Tsunoda to the team and expressed excitement about seeing him behind the wheel of the RB21.
A New Opportunity for Liam Lawson
Horner also emphasized Red Bull Racing’s duty of care to protect and develop Lawson, stating that after such a difficult start, it made sense to act quickly so Lawson could gain experience in his F1 career with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, an environment and team he is familiar with.

The Japanese Grand Prix will take place from 4-6 April at the iconic Suzuka Circuit. This event marks Tsunoda’s return to his home race and a new beginning for both him and Liam Lawson in their respective careers.
